I left this out of #229 to keep it smaller and easier to merge, but #161 used the following TS 5.5 feature to drasticlly simplify the tsconfigs: https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/release-notes/typescript-5-5.html#the-configdir-template-variable-for-configuration-files
