# Course overview
This course serves as an introduction to different areas of computer applications in archaeology, their methodology and applicable software. The aim is to provide an overview of current developments in this field and of standard software of scientific archaeological work. The main focus will be on the following:
* Digital tools for text production and publication (e.g. citation software)
* Data management/databases
* Data visualization and basic statistics
* 14C calibration
* GIS
In addition, a first insight into digital documentation/measurement is given, which will be deepened in a follow-up course in the next semester.

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:
* Use desktop and scientific software to write scientific thesiss
* Be able to basically understand and set up a data base
* Can visualise and analyse their data using simple methods.
* Are able to calibrate radiometric data successfully
* Can digitise and display sites using a GIS

# Meeting times & locations
### Lectures
The course is held according to the principle of an ''inverted classroom''. The teaching content is provided by means of videos and the textbook. Students are encouraged to work on this independently and to deepen it if necessary. A Slack channel ([2021-caa-berncodalab.slack.com](https://2021-caa-berncodalab.slack.com)) and the (virtual, if necessary) office hours are available for questions. I will also respond as quickly as possible to questions sent to me via email. The practical consolidation of the content takes place in the Computer Lab, where students work on their own semester projects.
### Computer Lab

If possible, the Computer Lab will be held in presence, provided that this complies with the regulations of the canton and the university. During this time, students can implement and deepen what they have learned independently in the context of their own semester projects in group work under the supervision of the lecturer. Your own computer equipment is recommended. If you have any problems in this regard, please let me know in advance. We will work exclusively with free software, if possible with open source solutions.

# Technology
This course will revolve around hands-on computing exercises that demonstrate the topics of interest. Therefore, students are strongly recommended to bring their own laptop to class, although students are certainly free to work with one another. **For students without access to a personal laptop**: Please let us know in time, and we will try to find a solution.
All of the software we will be using is free and platform independent, meaning students may use macOS, Linux, or Windows operating systems. In addition to a web browser, we will be using the free Office Suite [**LibreOffice**](https://www.libreoffice.org), the literature database [Zotero](https://www.zotero.org), the GIS software [**QGIS**](https://www.qgis.org). The instructor will be available to help students troubleshoot any software installation problems.

# Teaching methodology
This course will introduce new material primarily through prepared slides, videos and the text book. What is learned is then applied to a common project under supervision in the lab time. Students will be expected to work both individually and collaboratively (to the extent possible given the current conditions) during this time and also in general; course content and evaluation will emphasize the communication of ideas and the ability to think critically more so than a specific pathway or method. Other areas of this website provide an overview of the topics to be covered, including links to weekly reading assignments, lecture materials, computer labs, and homework assignments.

# Communication
This course will involve a *lot* of communication between and among students and the instructor. Short questions should be addressed to us via email; we will try my best to respond to your message within 24 hours. Under more normal circumstances, detailed questions would be addressed to us in person--either after class or during a scheduled meeting. In this case, however, we will schedule one-on-one or group video calls as needed.
In addition to email and video, we will use a [slack](https://slack.com) workspace ([2021-caa-berncodalab.slack.com](https://2021-caa-berncodalab.slack.com))to ask questions and assist others.

# Evaluation
Students will be evaluated on their knowledge of course content and their ability to communicate their understanding of the material via individual homework assignments (30%), a final project (40%), peer reviews (20%), and class participation (10%). There will be ? homework assignments, each of which will count toward ?% of the final grade. Please note, **all assignments must be turned in to achieve a passing grade**.
### Labwork (40%)
The results from the labwork (each Wednesday) is considered as "homework", and its submission is due by 11:59 PM PST on the following Wednesday. It will consist of some small tasks and practical approaches based on topics covered. There will be 8 assignments worth 5% each. Your learning in the class will be greatly enhanced by doing the "homework" which consist of applying the material you learn in each lecture to a data set.
### Individual project (30%)
Each student will have to write a complete, publishable (<10 page) paper that may, or may not, serve as a component of their thesis/dissertation. Given that some students might not have their own data, students may also use data from the instructors or public datasets.
### Peer reviews (20%)
Each student will have to provide 2 anonymous peer-reviews of their colleagues’ papers (10% each) during the winter break.
### Participation (10%)
We expect a certain amount of engagement from each student, which includes independently preparing the course content and attending and participating in the computer labs.
Students should discuss any potential schedule conflicts with the instructor during the first week of class.

# Academic integrity
Faculty and students at the University of Bern are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic conduct, professional honesty, and personal integrity. Plagiarism, cheating, and other academic misconduct are serious violations of the [Scientific Code of Conduct](https://swiss-academies.ch/en/themen/wissenschaftskultur/wissenschaftliche-integritat-1/). Students who have been guilty of a violation will receive zero points for the assignment in question.
