Improve feedback to user in case of AWS authentication error

Problem

Setup problems related to configuring/passing the AWS credentials are likely to occur.

In case of auth issue, the log / stderr show some message but it is not very clear.

Solution

Ideally test connectivity at startup.

Provide a clear error message (and guide end user regarding how to pass the credentials).
