Participate in Hacktoberfest 2023 with GitHub Social Impact

👾 Hacktoberfest 2023

Building on the great collaboration between the DPGA, GitHub Social Impact, and the DigitalOcean Social Impact teams, we want to highlight opportunities to contribute and volunteer on digital public goods for Hacktoberfest 2023!🎉

This year we are building a website that will showcase open issues on GitHub to increase discoverability https://forgoodfirstissue.dev/, as well, as hosting a live event and communication campaign through social media.

Hacktoberfest is an annual event that encourages people to contribute to open source throughout October, last year over 147,000 participants contributed to open source and GitHub amplified a list of volunteer opportunities that DPG maintainers submitted.

How to participate

Prepare your project for contributions by following these best practices:

• Add the “hacktoberfest” topic to your repository to opt-in to Hacktoberfest and indicate you’re looking for contributions.
• Apply the “hacktoberfest” or "good first issue" label to issues you want contributors to help within your GitHub or GitLab project.
• Add a tag to your issues that help identify which SDG(s) your project is related to. E.g. "SDG-1" "SDG-2"

Considerations

Contributing to large projects and helping with specific bugs or features is complex, so please consider beginner issues and low-code and non-code contributions as well, this is an excellent way to involve the community in supporting open source. Here are some examples:

• Improving technical and non-technical documentation.
• Translating documentation to other languages.
• Promotion and helping spread the word.

@ricardomiron we had spent some time improving our documentation on Uli and also curated beginner friendly code/non-code issues and its been rewarding so far. 4,5 new developers discovered us and 2 have made non trivial PRs!

We @OpenTermsArchive opted in our main contributory collection after several improvement to the contributor workflow 🙂
We can't add SDG labels to individual issues though, as they are too small increments and we have too many.

As for https://forgoodfirstissue.dev, it looks good, but I am surprised to see our repository does not appear there. Is it related to this SDG- labelling at issue level?

Due to the way we structure our repositories and organisations, the repositories listed in our DPG application will not match the ones where we support contributions.
