The dd-agent startup script ignores use_dogstatsd. Because of the way the subprocesses are started, however, it is possible that dd-agent will start successfully.

Counting number of started processes is anyway very dangerous. Instead the script should check if there are services running which do what they are supposed to do.

The initial issue with use_dogstatsd has been fixed (more details here): #1002

Regarding your other remark, i agree we should haver a better way to check if the agent is running properly.

However the right way to check if the collector is running properly would be a bit tricky.
