I have tried using this library but had no luck. I didn't really know what I was doing and was just messing around, but I couldn't find anything similar to how xcb handles things. There is also this Reddit comment that says it is probably impossible from outside the compositor. Currently how gobble handles Wayland is it spawns the new window but doesn't minimize the old one. I'll leave this issue open in case anyone wants to chime in or something changes in the future, but I have no plans to work on this.
