Unexpected interaction with orgtbl minor mode

I use markdown mode with orgtbl minor mode in order to manage tables inside my markdown files. (markdown-mode seems unlikely to implement its own table editing in the near future, as per jrblevin/markdown-mode#171)

Often when point is in the middle of a Markdown code block, I try to begin indirect editing but instead I get this message:

user-error: This key has no function outside tables

Is this something we can resolve from the edit-indirect side?
