The landscape of Velaka stretches out below the peak of this mountain of fine sand.
A wide valley between two mountains of unrelenting sand curves at a graceful arc between the peaks. To one side stands the gentle back slope of a dune, a simple yet tedious trek toward the apex, while opposite towers an imposing slip face, a short and exhausting climb. Between the two heights stretches a wedge of sky, bringing with it all the independent challenges of the Velakan day.

The landscape of Velaka stretches out below the peak of this mountain of fine sand. Sloping gently but acutely away from the towering height, only to rise again and again toward the horizon, an expansive field of crescent-shaped dunes crawls at a generational pace through the desert. Tiny trails ascend and descend the slip face on the concave side of the dune, evidence of whatever strange life thrives in this harsh world.

A low point stands between two great dune fields, separated by an arm of tall, jagged stones. Eastward stands an expansive sprawl of crescent-shaped dunes, the wide hills of blowing sand stretching out toward the far horizon. West beyond the stones, relatively calmer winds prevail, forming low mounds that roll to and fro.

This low point, nestled comfortably between the silhouettes of two oppressive sand dunes, offers superficial shelter from the wind carried by overhead. While from one perspective the valley serves to protect its inhabitants, the reality that escape through the shifting sand will be an arduous task looms ominously, hinted at by the distant slice of sky visible between the peaks.

Under a cold and uncaring sky, the pale and ghostly sand of the Velakan night sprawls in every direction. From this vantage point atop one of the massive, crescent-shaped dunes, the typically lifeless landscape of the desert becomes somehow more desolate and ominous. At least a full league from peak to peak, each dune stands alone in the darkness, exposed and silent in its sunless vigil, offering no shelter or comfort to lost travelers.

Though the sandy mountain is one in a sea of similar shapes stretching as far as the eye can see, cast in the shadow of darkness it manages to retain a solitary appearance. Still, several peaks rise yet higher into the air, as if challenging the wind to obliterate them before morning.

Dark and oppressive shapes loom on all sides, the shadowy nocturnal visages of the towering star-shaped dunes which dominate this portion of the Velaka Desert, stoic and silent. The horizon in every direction is blocked by the hulking mountains of sand, making navigation by landmark an impossibility, the dunes themselves changing shape in the passing wind. Overhead, visible only over the peaks of the darkened hills, the sky serves as a reminder of the depth of the valley.

The entirety of Velaka spreads out below this colossus of sand, the tremendous height of the mountain towering over all others within sight. From here the famous star-shaped patterns of the dune field are immediately apparent, looking much like an army of immense starfish crawling toward the mountains on the horizon out of a great ocean, leagues away. Unlike many of the other regions of the desert, no telltale signs of life persist here, proving this as the most untouched corner of this barren land.
