Enable Safe Exam Browser

Introduction

Safe Exam Browser is a web browser environment to carry out e-assessments safely. The software turns any computer temporarily into a secure workstation. It controls access to resources like system functions, other websites and applications and prevents unauthorized resources being used during an exam.it can do a much more effective job of restricting their actions.
  • Students will only be able to attempt the quiz if they are using Safe Exam Browser.
  • The browser window won't have a URL or search field and back/forward navigation and reload can be disabled.
  • Safe Exam Browser cannot be closed until the test is submitted.
  • Switching to other applications is disabled by default, but it's possible to allow to use specific third-party applications during an exam.
  • Shortcut keys such as Win+Tab, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Print Screen, Cmd+Tab are disabled or cannot be used to close Safe Exam.
  • Browser or to switch to other user accounts on the computer. The possibility of taking screen shots is disabled.
  • The clipboard is cleared when starting and quitting Safe Exam Browser.
  • The browser context menu is disabled.
  • Specific web sites/pages/resources can be configured to be accessible during an exam, using a URL filter.
  • Spell checking and dictionary lookup is disabled, but can optionally be allowed.

Step:

01- Install the Safe Exam Browser Plugin:

Note this plugin is not needed from Moodle 3.9 onwards any more. Its function is embedded in the default quizaccess_seb access rule. Version 'Release 1.4 for Moodle 3.4+ (20200727)' is the final release. If you are using Moodle version 3.4 or below, please follow the steps below.

  • Navigate to Site Administration > Plugins > Install Plugins.

  • Search for "Safe Exam Browser" and install the plugin.

02- Configure Global Settings (Optional):

  • Go to Site Administration > Plugins > Activity Modules > Quiz > Safe Exam Browser.

* Go to MyCourses > Select the couruse > Enable Edit Mode> Add an activity or resource >Select Quiz >Safe Exam Browser>

  • Choose 'Yes - Configure Manually' to edit how you want Safe Exam Browser to behave. image

  • Select 'Yes' to display the "Show Safe Exam Browser download button" option. Enabling this button in Moodle facilitates a seamless experience for your students, allowing them to swiftly download Safe Exam Browser on any device when taking a quiz. If students have already installed Safe Exam Browser on their personal devices, there's no need for them to repeat this step.

  • After you have configured SEB, you can download this configuration and use these settings for future quizzes. Otherwise, select 'Edit Quiz' or 'Back to the course'

Using Safe Exam Browser: A Guide for Students

  1. Visit the download page at https://safeexambrowser.org/download_en.html and acquire the most recent version of SEB. This software is compatible with Windows PC, Mac, and iOS. Keep in mind that SEB is not supported on Android phones or tablets, preventing the ability to take online tests on these devices.

  1. Disable popup blockers in the browser you typically use to access Moodle. Follow the links below for instructions on the most commonly used browsers:
  1. Go to the quiz in your course and click on it to start.
  2. Click the 'Launch Safe Exam Browser' button - ignore the other button labelled 'Download Configuration'

  1. A popup window will appear: In the popup window choose "Open Safe Exam browser". If you don’t see the popup window, go back to Step 2 to make sure you have enabled popups in the browser you are using.
  2. The Safe Exam Browser will launch and you will be prompted to enter your Moodle username and password to continue.
  3. After you enter the username and password you will see the "Attempt Quiz Now" button - click this to start the quiz.
  4. You won't be able to open any other windows or to switch to other applications.
  5. When you are done, click the Submit All button for the quiz and then close the Safe Exam browser using the 'Terminate Session' button at the bottom-right of the screen. You will be returned to Moodle in your usual browser.
