Hi there!

I wanted to report an issue with disappearing chaperone bounds, which is scary and may lead to dangerous situations.

It happens not everytime, but almost.

Should not be hard to replicate. It happened on previous beta also.

Best wishes, and i hope you can save someones monitor or health ;)

Like described in #652 it seems like the controllers do not trigger the chaperone which obviously is dangerous for your surroundings and your controllers. The "disappearing" happens when the HMD gets away from the chaperone, while the controllers are still close by. This causes the chaperone to go away, despite theoretically you touching a real life wall.

That's not a cause, but good hint!

I just tried it, and as chaperone disappeared i used my head(set) to check if the wall is there - it was, and chaperone showed up just 10cm away from it, where it should appear 80cm away.

Hm, seems like the chaperone is funky overall.

For now i recomment to use Show Play Space, as it works fine all the time.

VR applications including Revive can only force the chaperone to show. They can't force it to hide nor can they influence which devices make the chaperone show and at what distance.

If this is an issue with Revive, it's a side effect of some kind which will be very hard to find. So we have to be very certain this is a Revive-only issue or else I'll be on a wild goose chase.

I'll also try and reproduce the issue today so I can confirm it myself whether this really is a Revive issue.

I had simillar thing in RoboRecall (but not happening as frequent) especially in the "white-waiting-menu". That disappeared as i started to use RoboRevive. Wasnt so much bothering since it happened only in menu, not in game.

Any way we can help to track it down or narrow the cause?

It is happening basicaly all time and i've been talking in-game to other Vive player with same issue, so it's not just me.

Other Revive games where I've noticed this happening in the past were Dead & Buried and I think Superhot VR as well (not 100% sure about the latter anymore). I never noticed something like that in SteamVR games.

This was happening to me today in Echo Arena. I was really smashing up my walls because chaperone was ignoring my controllers. It's only ever happened to me in revive and I noticed it immediately because I have a small play space and usually reach out to bring the chaperone walls up to recenter myself.

This is not a Revive tip, but one of the players for EA suggested I turn on show center marker in OpenVR Advanced Settings. It helped quite a bit and never disappeared on me while playing the game. I also have a chaperone setting with the grid a very opaque red so I can easily see the center marker. I also found the Mamut Skull controller ring protectors work well (although for EA I need a rubber band to keep them on).

[Update: my hands are mashed up and after twisting my legs in the VIve cable, I fell and nearly knocked myself out. Great game, but if I were to keep playing, I would need a padded room. Take that however you like.]

Try specifying the following in your steamvr.vrsettings:

"revive" {
  DefaultTrackingOrigin: 1
}

Don't forget about the commas where needed. That should fix it while we search for a more permanent solution.

Can confirm, that line fixes the chaperone issue. Thank you! No more destroying my room when playing Echo Arena.
