[BUG] #86 needs porting to main

#86 was applied on a branch on top of v0.0.17 to create the v0.0.17.1 release. This also needs applying to main to fix the issue in main (it was applied to 0.0.17 because RAPIDS is pinned on <0.0.18 to avoid another incompatibility).

Following that, a new release should be made - and release numbers should probably switch to bumping the minor version rather than the patch version, so that patches don't need a fourth version digit.
