Can VMEC's "DMerc" quantity be added as a target in STELLOPT? I believe it is generally favored over the magnetic well target that is currently implemented. I would suggest penalizing any value in the DMerc array that is less than zero since DMerc > 0 implies stability.

Hello, the CIEMAT branch of STELLOPT has a DMerc target, though it is not quite like the one you describe.
This one works like other radial profile targets, such as NEO: you set a target value for a specified radial position. The format is as follows:
TARGET_DMER(010) = 1.000000000000E-001 SIGMA_DMER(010) = 2.500000000000E-003
With "(10)" specifying the 10th radial position being evaluated by VMEC, and target and sigma being the usual quantities.
I hope this helps.

@GuilleLGS this is good but breaks the general target concept for equilibrium properties which are evaluated everywhere.
