It would be great to have some list of what is already implemented and what is not, for ease the contributing.

Thanks @baldrs. I lot of the codebase has been inherited so I'll backtrace the Git log to see what has been added already. I'll update the original issue description with a task list of outstanding items.

I am archiving this discussion as it has gotten quite old now and hasn't seen any updated in over an year. We support most of PHP 5.6 new features and the exponent operator is not a big deal.

We'll need a separate issue to track progress for PHP 7 features.
