Discovered this just a moment ago - and thought I'd go out of my way to file a bug report.

Nature of Bug:

Life Shards [Aether Legacy, possibly Aether II as well] can be essentially "tricked" into giving no additional health while still increasing the "used counter" by having mods installed that can increase the player's health either to 40 health or beyond 40 health.

In the Lehman's terms - having Spice of Life: Carrot Edition or using Cyclic Heart Containers can render Life Shards completely useless. [Unless you use the Life Shards first.]
