For querying there are three main possibilities:

one or several author names
all publications from one or several institutions
explicit query url in advanced options

Then, there are further filters and options...

Error messages:

"No Publications in XML." --> check that your query is not empty, maybe follow the query url manually (how exactly?)...
...

I guess that this would be something like a user manual.

A user manual is a very good idea.

I think it must be ready, when the extension is compatible with eprints in general. - So still some time.

Would it be sufficient at the moment to provide some infos in the github wiki?
