Cannot boot 10.4 or 10.5 ISOs #6
Comments
What iso are you using, and did you follow the instructions to ensure the virtual CD drive is at the top of the drive list? |
I dowloaded a couple of different ISOs from various sources. I have also tried disabling HDD at all to ensure boot device is correct. |
I have tried 6 different images now... |
That’s really odd; we must have had overlap between our images by now. Maybe it’s something that’s changed for the PPC emulation specifically for the isos since UTM 3.X. I’ll try another “from scratch “ session this weekend and see if I can replicate your issues and then figure out the fix.

I downloaded an image from archive.org and got this error. I tried one I had in some disk drive from eons ago and it did boot, but the installation fails 😞 Update: I won't link to it, but there's a DMG image available in archive.org that worked for me. Search for "Tiger Intel/PPC" |
You’re attempting to boot PPC images? X86 ones won’t work. You may need to boot 10.4.8 or later; I seem to recall all the 10.5 PPC/Universal ones I tried working.-Em On Aug 21, 2022, at 10:03 PM, Bruno Philipe ***@***.***> wrote:

@adespoton @brunophilipe Has anyone found a solution for this? It is still broken, apparently. |
Do your images boot using the emaculation.com QEMU builds? That should at least isolate if this is a QEMU or UTM issue.-Em On Nov 17, 2023, at 6:02 PM, Sergey Fedorov ***@***.***> wrote:

I downloaded an ISO of 10.5.6 release which worked for me to install Leopard on an PowerMac G5 natively earlier. The ISO mounts normally on Sonoma. I do not have Qemu (never used it), but the ISO as such should be perfectly fine, I believe. (I did initially try a stripped PPC-only version, which also failed, then went for a proper release, with unchanged result.) I can try with Qemu, need to find some info on how to go about it. |
Emaculation.com has the binaries and documentation on how to run it. If that works, we know the issue is in UTM itself and can escalate to Osy; if it doesn't work, we know a regression has been introduced to QEMU-PPC and it needs to be escalated to the QEMU devs (mostly Mark Cave-Ayland). [edit] that's of course assuming the issue isn't with the images themselves; I usually use retail images, but have also used a G4 tower image with success. |
Double checked these are both PPC versions
