The book "Plain English at Work" by Edward P. Bailey has a set of recommendations, primarily focused at replacing bureaucratic language with simpler and clearer phrases.

Its "appendix A" has a set of words and recommended alternatives. Examples are:

  • accomplish -> do
  • afford an opportunity -> let
  • anticipate -> expect
  • assist -> help

Would this be of interest? I'd be willing to type them in if #238 is fixed.
