Reach 90% test coverage

Per #12, the goal is to reach 90% coverage for the 2.0.0 release. @bbfrederick would you be willing to create a milestone for 2.0.0 and assign this issue to that milestone?

After a burst of activity a few weeks ago, I managed to get coverage up to 46% (from languishing at 19 where it had for quite some time). Getting to this point actually helped me find and exterminate several bugs. I'm starting to thing that 90% coverage may be too optimistic though. I can certainly see getting higher than were we are. I'll put some more work into this in the next few weeks and see where we get to. I've been building up a number of compatibility breaking interface changes, and would like to switch over to the new option structure, but that should be done in a major number release...
