It does not appear that trying to tie into the helicopter event will be viable. However, what is viable, and offers more control, would be to design a replacement for the helicopter event.

Ideas:

  • It would have to forcibly disable the helicopter event in sandbox settings.
  • The helicopter wouldn't single out the player and hover over them with no discernible goal.
  • The helicopter would be instead surveying and attempting (but ultimately fail) in helping for survivors.

A rough idea of events:

  • Event "0" - If radios/TV are still operational there could be an emergency broadcast stating that there will be relief-aid dropped off for survivors who are observed by surveying helicopters. (This means it would benefit the player to run outside to the helicopter.)
  • Event 1 - Possibly within day 5-7 the helicopter can flyby the player's location briefly and if spotted drop a small care package with a note stating more relief will be on the way but that they should not seek escape at this point in time, etc.
  • Event 2 - the helicopter can perform a "dropoff" once a week for 2-3 weeks.
  • Event 3 - After a few trips out the helicopter would instead crash (I would suggest having a increasing chance after each trip) - the crash would be off screen after passing by the player. (The player would have the option to investigate.)

Potential bonuses of creating our own helicopter instance/event like this would be how much more control we'd have over the event but also adding other similar events later. For example the radio/TV could announce a month into the game that they will be napalming parts of cities.

I like the idea of an expanded helicopter event you described. We should separate each event idea in a separate issue.
