И тут я бы использовал ту же идею что и авторы IDM UltraEdit/UEStudio - если файл невелик, считыаем его в буфер и красим целиком, если большой, то читаем блоками с упреждением относительно текущей позиции. Думаю это поможет, да и нагрузку на подсистему I/O распределит во времени, не говоря о чисто счётной нагрузке.
