Sinusoidal Multipass for samplers

NovelAI has recently incorporated an alternate sampler based on k_euler_ancestral, named Sinusoidal Multipass Euler Ancestral (smea). The primary benefit of this is being able to increase resolution (>1024px) without sacrificing quality or running into issues with repeated elements, and not using a workaround such as generating at a lower resolution and running an img2img pass at a higher resolution, although it does sound vaguely similar to that to me based on the description. Curious if there's any insight about how something like this could perhaps be implemented. (Maybe even for other samplers?)

I'm not sure whether they're describing something related to multi-Unet guidance. I reckon it's not related, but I don't fully understand their explanation.
