Installer keeps hanging #1172
Comments
Hello @AntonioCS I'm seeing the same. Every single time I try to upgrade Docker on Windows 10 Pro it hangs forever... It's sad, has anybody REALLY tested this on Win10 ? :( |
Hi @AntonioCS @simmessa |
Hello @jasonbivins I can confirm the latest build (17.09.0-ce-win33) fixed this issue and I was able to update Docker on Windows 10. Many thanks! S. |
17.09.0-ce-win33 in the stable channel does NOT fix my issue. The 17.09.0-ce-win34 in the edge channel fixed the problem. |
@simmessa I get the same hanging on the current Stable and Edge version. 64bit Windows 10 Pro with Hyper-V |
Sorry, after a reboot dfw is running. |
I'm experiencing the same problem, despite multiple restarts. I suspected my Avast to interfere, but disabling it hasn't had any effect. The |
@jasonbivins Can you please reopen this issue? |
A debug log option would be great! |
@szepeviktor Where is the debug file generated? |
Nowhere, that is the point. |
I'm not able to work around this; restarted, reinstalled hyper-v, removed Docker directory before reinstalling all to no avail. Any known workarounds? EDIT: Once I refreshed my Windows installation, it installed just fine. |
I have the same issue and the Windows refresh is not an option for me. |
This seems to be getting critical. |
I'm in the comfortable position that Docker is not a key part of my workflow anymore, so I can sit this out for a while if I have to. But I do agree that it would be nice to have some feedback, or better yet, a solution. |
Same issue here. Can't update. I tryed the latest stable and edge version, including msi installer. |
@jasonbivins Any news on this? Is there any info we can provide to narrow down the problem? |
I am having the same issue as well, is there anyone working on this issue? |
@SpoonOfDoom |
Can we please, please.. ditch the fancy "fading" status window during install for a normal text box or something that can properly scroll and be copied/pasted? |
Most recent installer worked for my colleague where previous version didn't. |
I confirm this is the solution. It worked for 2.1.0.0, but I had to manually force close in task manager/detail tab : before running the installer again |
It is really a shame this still plagues the docker windows community. |
I guess the docker team really doesn't care about Windows users at all, or there would at least be some kind of communication about why this can't or won't be fixed. It's a shame, really. |
Because none of the users above paid that’s why |
Anyway, this 'hack' worked once and now it doesn't work anymore |
Success after deleting |
If anyone has issue with this still, for me simply removing |
I got the same problem today and narrowed down the problem (Well for me it worked) So basically when docker prompts to do an upgrade, it runs the installer inside the "C:\Program Files\Docker" folder. The problem is that at the end of the installation, all files are in the location "C:\Program Files\Docker\Docker" (Note the extra "Docker" folder) and removes everything else inside "C:\Program Files\Docker" but fails to do so because the installer that is currently running is in that folder and therefor fails. I simply copied the "Docker Desktop Installer.exe" to another folder (My Desktop), removed the "C:\Program Files\Docker" folder and ran the installation exe from my desktop. All worked fine. |
I ran into this as well (Windows 10 Pro, Docker 2.1 - install from scratch), and none of the above solutions worked. For me, what did the trick was deleting all Program Files\Docker and %ProgramData%\DockerDesktop, then running the installer from scratch, and deselecting the "Create Desktop Icon" and "Run Windows Containers" options. After that, docker installed, and I was able to manually switch to Windows containers and create the desktop icon. Just one more thing to add to the ever growing list of "gotchyas" that comes with running Docker for Windows. |
One more thing to check that worked for me. My installation was failing on "Starting Docker service" (or something like that). [ Note that I was at first confused by the fact that the log file in the window fades away. I am so used to looking at the bottom of a log file for the error. However, in the Docker installer, the log output scrolls downwards, which means that the command it is hanging on is at the top of the window.] Anyway, having seen it was hanging on "Starting Docker service", I went to the Windows services (Start->(type) Services). I found the Docker service and when I tried to interact with it (can't remember the option I chose), I got a message saying it was marked for deletion. I rebooted my machine ( I had already deleted all Docker related files in Program Files and ProgramData as mentioned above). When my machine was rebooted the Docker service was not there and then I was able to complete the install. I then got an upgrade notification and that also worked. I hope this helps someone. |
Just to leave a note. Disabling antivirus soft should work. Try this one first!! |
Still not working:
|
I have stopped using docker on windows via the installer. |
Similar with Docker Desktop 2.1.0.4 Attempted with all checkboxes unchecked but still seems to stall when reaching "Deploying component: Run Docker Desktop backend service" Remove folders, reboot, turned off firewall, and try reinstall and still stalls when reaching "Deploying component: Run Docker Desktop backend service" |
Same issue, it does not work on two machines both Windows 10 PRO 64 |
If it hangs at the «Run Docker Desktop backend service» step, they are a couple of things you can try:
|
Just wanted to share - with the latest Docker for Windows update - it upgraded flawlessly for me. Windows 10 Pro 1909 x64. Thanks to everyone who helped make it work better! |
I agree - I was one of those previously battling. I am now able to upgrade without issues and and my colleges are able to install fresh installations without issue (with McAfee running). |

I am also unable to cancel the installation.
