Installer keeps hanging #1172

Expected behavior

Install new version of docker

Actual behavior

Hangs when installing

Information

I am on Windows 10 Pro.
I have started to dread when I get the update window from docker.
Instead of updating via that I just download the installer but it seems even that hangs.

image

It's been like that for the past 10m.
I am also unable to cancel the installation.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

Try to update a new version of docker on windows

Hello @AntonioCS I'm seeing the same. Every single time I try to upgrade Docker on Windows 10 Pro it hangs forever... It's sad, has anybody REALLY tested this on Win10 ? :(

@jasonbivins

Hi @AntonioCS @simmessa
We pushed new releases on the Edge and Stable channels this weekend specifically to target startup and installation/upgrade issues.
Can you try the new version and let me know if it's still getting stuck? https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-windows/install/

Hello @jasonbivins I can confirm the latest build (17.09.0-ce-win33) fixed this issue and I was able to update Docker on Windows 10.

Many thanks!

17.09.0-ce-win33 in the stable channel does NOT fix my issue. The 17.09.0-ce-win34 in the edge channel fixed the problem.

Same with current release. Being hanged for tens of minutes.

i will restart and give another try.

After restart issue is fixed, but it would be good to have, no restart enforcement.

I'm experiencing the same problem, despite multiple restarts. I suspected my Avast to interfere, but disabling it hasn't had any effect. The \Program Files\Docker directory gets created and filled with files, but after that, the installer just hangs indefinitely (this last attempt has now been running for 30+ minutes). Cancel installation doesn't work either - I get the "do you really want to cancel?" question once, but after that nothing happens. Only way out is killing the installer via task manager.
This issue does not seem fixed to me.

It's clearly not fixed as I continue to have the same issue as do other people.

I'm not able to work around this; restarted, reinstalled hyper-v, removed Docker directory before reinstalling all to no avail. Any known workarounds?

EDIT: Once I refreshed my Windows installation, it installed just fine.

I have the same issue and the Windows refresh is not an option for me.
I hope it will be fixed soon as it is a real blocker of my work !
Thanks

This seems to be getting critical.
@jasonbivins Any update on this?

@SpoonOfDoom

I'm in the comfortable position that Docker is not a key part of my workflow anymore, so I can sit this out for a while if I have to. But I do agree that it would be nice to have some feedback, or better yet, a solution.

@SpoonOfDoom
can you try removing the upgraders' registry key and try installing again? Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Docker for Windows

@nicholashead

Can we please, please.. ditch the fancy "fading" status window during install for a normal text box or something that can properly scroll and be copied/pasted?

Most recent installer worked for my colleague where previous version didn't.

@cloud1250x4
Copy link

After having been fighting with this for over a week, I get it working by NOT closing the installer when it is hung, just restart immediately your computer and by running the installer once again the installation should succeed.

image

I confirm this is the solution.

It worked for 2.1.0.0, but I had to manually force close in task manager/detail tab :
com.docker.service

before running the installer again

It is really a shame this still plagues the docker windows community.
I opened this issue on Oct 5, 2017.. how is this not solved by now???
@cloud1250x4 that is a hack to get this working, that can't be the solution.
The solution would be someone from the docker team figuring out what the heck is happening during the installation process that makes the installer hang. I believe some people in this issue have pointed to possible causes.

@SpoonOfDoom
Copy link

I guess the docker team really doesn't care about Windows users at all, or there would at least be some kind of communication about why this can't or won't be fixed. It's a shame, really.

Because none of the users above paid that’s why

Success after deleting C:\Program Files\Docker\Docker and running the installer.
After loading the new installed Docker, 2.0.0.1 got available and it is now installing

If anyone has issue with this still, for me simply removing ProgramData\Docker and Program Files\Docker\Docker and reinstalling docker desktop installer worked.

brandon-blb commented Aug 14, 2019

I got the same problem today and narrowed down the problem (Well for me it worked)

So basically when docker prompts to do an upgrade, it runs the installer inside the "C:\Program Files\Docker" folder.

The problem is that at the end of the installation, all files are in the location "C:\Program Files\Docker\Docker" (Note the extra "Docker" folder) and removes everything else inside "C:\Program Files\Docker" but fails to do so because the installer that is currently running is in that folder and therefor fails.

I simply copied the "Docker Desktop Installer.exe" to another folder (My Desktop), removed the "C:\Program Files\Docker" folder and ran the installation exe from my desktop.

All worked fine.

@ErickAdam
Copy link

I ran into this as well (Windows 10 Pro, Docker 2.1 - install from scratch), and none of the above solutions worked. For me, what did the trick was deleting all Program Files\Docker and %ProgramData%\DockerDesktop, then running the installer from scratch, and deselecting the "Create Desktop Icon" and "Run Windows Containers" options. After that, docker installed, and I was able to manually switch to Windows containers and create the desktop icon.

Just one more thing to add to the ever growing list of "gotchyas" that comes with running Docker for Windows.

@RossVertizan
Copy link

One more thing to check that worked for me.

My installation was failing on "Starting Docker service" (or something like that).

[ Note that I was at first confused by the fact that the log file in the window fades away. I am so used to looking at the bottom of a log file for the error. However, in the Docker installer, the log output scrolls downwards, which means that the command it is hanging on is at the top of the window.]

Anyway, having seen it was hanging on "Starting Docker service", I went to the Windows services (Start->(type) Services). I found the Docker service and when I tried to interact with it (can't remember the option I chose), I got a message saying it was marked for deletion.

I rebooted my machine ( I had already deleted all Docker related files in Program Files and ProgramData as mentioned above). When my machine was rebooted the Docker service was not there and then I was able to complete the install. I then got an upgrade notification and that also worked.

I hope this helps someone.

Still not working:

  • Version: 2.1.0.4, Windows 10 Pro
  • ❌ Disabling anti virus (Windows Defender) didn't worked
  • ❌ Deleting Program Files\Docker and %ProgramData%\DockerDesktop didn't worked
  • ✔️ The following worked
    • (Uninstall Docker Desktop (instead of auto update))
    • 💥 Reboot, because of pending service removal (thanks @RossVertizan for the hint)
    • Install Docker Desktop

I have stopped using docker on windows via the installer.
Besides the update issues (which seems no dev wants to fix or at least investigate properly) I have been having huge slowness issues with php projects (big symfony projects 100+ packages).
I have this https://github.com/AntonioCS/vagrantDockerEnv which while not perfect has absolved me from all the issues I have mentioned.
No more update issues and no more slow projects, the only thing I need is for phpstorm (IDE used for php projects) to sync my project to the non-shared folder in vagrant and everything runs smoothly.

Similar with Docker Desktop 2.1.0.4

Attempted with all checkboxes unchecked but still seems to stall when reaching "Deploying component: Run Docker Desktop backend service"

Remove folders, reboot, turned off firewall, and try reinstall and still stalls when reaching "Deploying component: Run Docker Desktop backend service"

If it hangs at the «Run Docker Desktop backend service» step, they are a couple of things you can try:

  • test with the latest Edge version if it still does the same: https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-windows/edge-release-notes/
  • check in the Windows event viewer around the time when it stayed stuck to see if you have any error message
  • look in the log files in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Docker for any error message, depending whether it’s an installation started by double clicking on the installer or using the «Check for Updates» from a previous version it’s either log.txt or install-log.txt

I agree - I was one of those previously battling. I am now able to upgrade without issues and and my colleges are able to install fresh installations without issue (with McAfee running).
