This regression was mostly caused by moving logics into generic methods. There isn't much we could do on Mono side. |
CC. @stephentoub as an FYI This is another case where the move to use generics results in significant reduction in code complexity and improves long term maintainability on the libraries side; but where it ends up hurting the perf for Mono given that it doesn't have generic specialization support like RyuJIT/NAOT have. Based on prior discussions, supporting generic specialization in Mono is a substantial amount of work and there are additional complexities for MonoAOT since they do not require or depend on the trimmer in the same way that NAOT does; this is intentional so they can support a broader range of scenarios for iOS/Android. |

just FYI: it isn't only microbenchmark perf that is regressing, the newly introduced generics are hurting size of MonoAOT scenarios as well (affecting iOS mainly) e.g. #100975. |
Is there an easy way to measure how much of that is from using generics vs how much is from the expansive additional functionality required? My guess would be that we’d see similar overall size regressions had we duplicated the code instead (and instead effectively forced manual specialization) It would also be interesting to know if the size increase potentially because MonoAOT is trying to handle scenarios that are unreachable for the USG implementation. I believe the size increase would be present even if we would introduce specialized APIs instead of generics. I created a tracking issue for the increasing app size due to BCL changes and small investigation into generics vs specialized APIs at #105701. |
