While looking at geoserver logs I got the following error :

geoserver  | 29 028 10:28:01 WARN   [servlet.PageNotFound] - No mapping for GET /geoserver/rest/rest/about/version.xml

Above url should be with single rest not 2

Weird, since version is retrieved in any case at https://github.com/eblondel/geosapi/blob/master/R/GSVersion.R#L74
Will check
