Is there a reason, that the backend uri can only be set in config.js? Since I use a lot of different backends, I would prefer, if the user can change the cluster uri via the UI.

The Elasticsearch URL is set in the config file because Kibana stores state data in Elasticsearch and must know the path to elasticsearch to initialize successfully.
