Windows Installation Notes
--------------------------

Because ``pip`` cannot has difficulty installing some packages in
Windows (particulary packages with dependencies on other libraries or
that require compliation, including lxml and pycrypto), the
installation instructions in :ref:`DEPLOYNOTES` may not work on
Windows.

What follows is partial installation instructions / working notes
about installing python dependencies in Windows.  Be forewarned that
these notes do not guarantee a complete or fully-working installation
of The Keep.

Installation for Python 2.7 under 32-bit Windows.

python-magic
  * Download and install **File** for Windows from http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/file.htm
  * In <installation directory>\GnuWin32\bin,  copy magic1.dll to magic.dll.
  * Add <installation directory>\GnuWin32\bin to your system PATH
  * Copy the contents of <installation directory>\GnuWin32\share\file\ into C:\Program Files\File\share\file

    * It may be possible to configure this directory; see
      http://www.mail-archive.com/python-list@python.org/msg195285.html and
      http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-list/2008-May/1145223.html 

  * Run ``pip install python-magic``
  * Test installation in the python console::

    >>> import magic
    >>> test = magic.Magic()

    If this does not generate an error, python-magic and the File
    library are installed correctly.
	

Windows install with pip/virtualenv
-----------------------------------

This is a second attempt to install dependencies using pip and
virtualenv as much as possible.

* Install Python 2.7 for Windows from
  http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.1/ . Add python install
  and python scripts directories (e.g.,
  ``c:\Python27;c:\Python27\Scripts``) to your system PATH.
* Install setuptools manually using the link above (this includes
  easy_install, which should now be in your python scripts directory).
* Install mingw for python packages that require compilation.
  Available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/ .
  Add mingw install directory with compile commands to your system
  PATH.
* Create a distutils config file to configure pip installations
  to automatically use mingw when compilation is required.  Create a
  file named **pydistutils.cfg** in the settings directory for your
  user account, e.g. ``c:\Users\myusername\`` or ``c:\Documents and
  Settings\myusername\`` with the following contents::

    [build]
    compiler = mingw32

  For more information on distutils configuration file, including
  possible installation locations on various systems, see
  http://docs.python.org/install/index.html#distutils-configuration-files .

* It should be possible to install the necessary libraries to allow
  pip to install lxml (see
  http://codespeak.net/lxml/build.html#static-linking-on-windows for
  more information and ftp://ftp.zlatkovic.com/pub/libxml/ for windows
  versions of the necessary libraries).  However, a simpler solution
  is to just use easy_install::

    $ easy_install lxml

* Install openldap libraries for python-ldap from 
  http://www.voxgratia.org/bin/openldap-2.1.17_bin.zip and libsasl
  dll and include files from ftp://ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/cyrus-mail/

* Follow steps from standard install instructions::

    easy_install.py pip
    pip install virtualenv

* Create a virtualenv as in standard install instructions, then
  activate, e.g.::

    $ . c:\thekeep\env\Scripts\activate.bat

* ... using ``pip install -r pip-dependencies`` is still currently
  resulting in some unresolved problems...
