Empty funders being added to DataCite XML

A user came across the following confusion situation when trying to coin a DOI which resulted in the coining event failing:

"The user had added a funder name under Other and then set the field back to Unpsecified. The record retained the funder name value but hidden from view in the edit workflow (although it displayed on the published record). It was generating an empty funding reference field in the DataCite XML"
