Generalize handling of reference checking

The current system for reference handling and checking is designed for Xvr refs. There exists references that are not to Xvrs and not everyone should be checked, thus giving rise to many different validation functions.

The configuration in objects.yaml should be updated to handle more information about types of references, checks etc. to generalize the handling for each object.
