Usability Testing 09/01/20

Testing a prototype version of our game with potential users - Parents and kids aged roughly 4-7.

The playable figma prototype is here: https://www.figma.com/proto/0JWLkTWl4IFKRodfEZkkky/Recycling-Game?node-id=177%3A235&scaling=scale-down

Script and questions

Introduction

Hi there, My name is ...., we're building a game to teach children about recycling and would love to test a prototype with you/ your child. We'll only need about 10mins of your time, max.
Is this something you'd be willing to help us with?

Just so you know, my colleague will be taking a few notes. We're in the very early stages so this is just a visual prototype.

We're testing the usability of the game, not how well you play, so please explore freely - there's no right or wrong way to do this! This is not about you getting something wrong or right, we're looking to learn as much as we can about the game.

So that we know how you're finding it, we would love if you could talk aloud and tell us whatever you're thinking. And don't be worried about being offensive or repetitive, we're looking for honest feedback. So tell us anything that comes into your mind.

Tasks for the user to try out

Can you complete the following tasks?:

  • Try playing the game
  • Can you find instructions for how to play whilst you're playing?
  • Can you quit from the game screen?
  • Explore the app.

Questions for after the demo and initial thoughts

  • How old is your child/ are your children?
  • Would you/your child be able to understand the game
  • What do you think of the overall design?
  • Would you want to play this game in real life?
  • Do you like the sea setting and the characters?
  • Do you think you would want to play the game more than once?
  • Do you think you/your child would be able to learn from the game
  • Is everything readable and are things like buttons easy to understand where they go?
  • Are there any features you thought were unnecessary or missing?
  • Is there anything you definitely don't like about the game?
  • Do you think you could use this game and information to teach your child about recycling?
  • Did anything stick out for you that you’d like to share?
  • Would you share this game with other parents?

Say thank you

The session is now complete, Thank so much for the help you’ve given us to improve our game.

Notes for the tester

Only observe and take notes while they're using the game, try not to answer any questions.
One person should conduct the interview and the other to take notes.

Top Insights

  • Parents might like an option to share the game from home and game ending screens
  • It is unclear what the speed slider does on the landing page - add to how to play page.
  • The how to play page could be more comprehensive with other elements of the game added.
  • It wasn't entirely clear when a correct or incorrect choice was made in the game - currently too subtle.
  • The lives and points system was unclear on first try.
  • Once the game is ended the information is fun and useful, but perhaps needs more of a nudge/easier indication to create desire to play again - primary call to action wasn't highlighted and results info split across 2 pages.
  • Some of the text - particularly in the info page is quite lengthy. Even parts that are aimed for further discussion with parents could be more geared towards being read by the kids too - use bullet points etc.
  • The game seems more 'cbeebies than cbbc' - pitched at the younger end (4-6) rather than the top end of our group (7-9), this correlates with our user research findings.
  • Younger kids are still learning to read and may struggle with text elements. Voice or sound cues as well as visual feedback would be helpful.
