We're hammering out the details for a new encryption scheme for nostr over at nostr-protocol/nips#715
NIP-04 is vulnerable in a number of ways. It's very important that we build with better cryptographic primitives going forward.
Describe the solution
Support should be added for NIP-44 encryption and decryption so that users can access nostr features built on the new primitives.
Describe alternatives
Keeping NIP 04 is unacceptable, this doesn't broaden the scope of Alby so this question is sort of N/A
Additional context
More context is available here. NIP 44 is not yet merged, but was originally drafted (and has been reviewed) by Paul Miller. NIP 44 supports NIP 59 wrapping, which in turn supports a new version of nostr DMs and group chat.
