Pulseaudio output not working #1346

I'm trying to get hydrogen to work on my archlinux installation. I only get "Error starting audio driver", even when I choose pulseaudio in the Audio tab. Below the output from the commandline. It looks like it doesn't even try to use pulseaudio.
How can I debug this further?

Interesting find! It looks like the audio drivers are all named explicitly when parsing the options, and PulseAudio was never added to this. Looks like the only ones so named are actually JACK, OSS and ALSA.

Are you able to select PulseAudio in the Audio System tab of the Preferences dialog?

When I choose PulseAudio and 'Restart output", i get the exact same lines of output as above again, except the last line about the NullDriver. Still "Error starting audio driver".

Hydrogen really needs to give more feedback to the user in the GUI when things don't work :/

You can hopefully get some more useful information from it by turning up the verbosity:

Unfortunately not, still nothing about PulseAudio. Why does it even try to use Alsa when I select PulseAudio? It just doesn't matter what I choose in the dropdown box before hitting restart.

From 1.0.2, if Hydrogen can't open the requested audio system, it will behave like "Auto" has been selected and attempt to open any audio system it can in order to provide a fallback, and that's probably what's happening here.

I've just taken a look at the source for the PulseAudio driver for the first time, and it looks like it doesn't provide any feedback whatsoever when it fails to connect. That needs to be improved.

Are you using the hydrogen package from your distro or building from source?

I don't see anything like this from strace in my working PulseAudio, but... actually, on further thought that looks like it's just ALSA reading configuration after the PulseAudio AudioOutput gives up.

Since PulseAudio communicates over regular system calls, not much would show up in strace, but if you start looking from around a call to pipe, I think the PulseAudio output is the only thing that will call pipe.

Are you able to build from source? If so adding some tracing would be helpful (I can add this on a branch if needed).

Ok, I installed the hydrogen-git package which builds from git (hydrogen-git 1.1.0.beta1.r31.gacd1b9f7-2). Unfortunately it just works when I choose PulseAudio from the menu. So either something is fixed in 1.1.0 beta or it is somehow related to the build process. Anyway, it works :)

There hasn't really been anything fixed between 1.0.2 and 1.1 beta (that I can think of) which would account for that. So I guess it's a packaging issue then. Well, glad it works for you now anyway! :)

Just to be sure: you are using plain PulseAudio and not PipeWire with PulseAudio as backend, right?
