Markdown MathML Output

The markdown transformations appear to be suppressing output for MathML content. Any suggestions for allowing the MathML elements to pass through as elements within the markdown output so that they can be handled downstream via HTML+MathJAX? I'm okay producing a plugin with an XSL customization if this is the recommended approach but am having trouble figuring out which template to override.
