Is this a BUG REPORT or FEATURE REQUEST? (choose one): BUG REPORT

Please provide the following details:

Environment:

Minikube version (use minikube version): v0.26.0

  • OS (e.g. from /etc/os-release): macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
  • VM Driver: virtualbox or hyperkit
  • ISO version: minikube-v0.26.0.iso
  • ISO version:

What happened:
Can't start a v1.9.x (1.9.4 or 1.9.6) Kubernetes instance using latest minikube (0.26.0), while I have no issue running the default Kubernetes version (v1.10.0).

What you expected to happen:
Didn't have this issue when running the previous minikube release (0.25.2) while using the kubeadm bootstrapper (when launching v1.9.6 instance)

How to reproduce it (as minimally and precisely as possible):

$ minikube version
minikube version: v0.26.0
$ /usr/local/bin/minikube start --kubernetes-version v1.9.4

Output of minikube logs (if applicable):

Anything else do we need to know:
I can start it if using localkube as the value to the bootstrapper option:

WARNING: The localkube bootstrapper is now deprecated and support for it
will be removed in a future release. Please consider switching to the kubeadm bootstrapper, which
is intended to replace the localkube bootstrapper. To disable this message, run
[minikube config set ShowBootstrapperDeprecationNotification false]

Hmm, that error should have been fixed with #2404 (ea4ed7e)

It was finally addressed in Kubernetes 1.10, but the workaround should have applied to earlier versions

Ouch, sadly the required ignore (CRI) was lost in the refactoring...

that @dlorenc did in cc356e6

An error has occurred. Would you like to opt in to sending anonymized crash
information to minikube to help prevent future errors?
To opt out of these messages, run the command:
