Make this part of the release sequence. perhaps have 2 ant builds? verbose and fast.

Ok ran that and removed most of the unused variables it found. Some were false alarms though.

There were lots of these though (698 in fact)

[WARNING] Try to use a single 'var' statement per scope.

Should we press ahead and implement this?
