NHS-R Committee Meeting

16 July 2024

Via Teams

Attendees:  Zoë Turner, Tom Jemmett, Anya Ferguson, Natasha Stephenson, Ben Murch

Sam Hollings, Paul Johnson, Annie Yu

Will Yuill has stepped down from the Committee due to work pressures.  The Committee thanked Will for his contribution to the Committee.

The Committee welcomed Anya Ferguson as a new member of the Committee.

Conference:

·        Natasha Stephenson was welcomed to the meeting; Natasha provided input on merchandise / comms.

·        The first day of the conference is now sold out with day two close to selling out.   We are holding back 20 places for emergency tickets on both days.

·        The current deadline for receipt of abstracts is 26 July;  submission has been slow so far with just five received.

·        We agreed catering at the conference will be 50/50 vegetarian/vegan.

·        We agreed directional floor stickers and double-sided m stand at a cost of £267.50.

·        Sponsorship – we are still waiting to see if NHSE are able to provide any funding.

·        Jumping Rivers and RSS have agreed to sponsor and will have a stand each at the conference.

·        Apha will have a stand as a partner organisation.

·        Merchandise – we agreed that pin badges would be a good idea and can be used at HACA to identify NHS-R people and then re-used for RPySoc.

HACA

·        NHS-R will have a stand and banner at HACA.

·        Natasha and Maciej are arranging for A4 pages printed with NHS-R logo and QR code linked to conference information website.

·        Tom has sufficient NHS-R stickers for HACA but will need to order more for RPySOC 24.  Action:  Tom to let Zoë have details.

·        Sam confirmed that the NHS-R/Python workshops for HACA are all planned. Comms will go out via Eventbrite to make people aware and to remind people to bring their laptops.

·        Networking evening event – keynotes speakers are not all aware of the NHS-R community.  Natasha is happy to bridge conversations with keynote speakers to raise awareness.

·        Zoë will use SubStack to remind all at HACA that they are welcome to help out and be part of the NHS-R Community.

Workshops and webinars

James Partington delivered a very successful webinar on 10 July: “Unveiling Congenital Heart Disease and Comorbidities – ground-breaking collaboration using primary care data” which was not necessarily R or Python based but was in the spirit of sharing (including SNOMED codes) reiterating that NHS-R Community is not just about R.

Annie Yu is presenting “Interactive plotting with R” on 17 July and Chris Mainey “Modelling non-linear data with Generalized Additive Models (GAMs), using the mgcv package” on 4 September. As with all NHS-R workshops and webinars, these have been fully booked with long waiting lists and many views once posted to YouTube.  We have also noted that the podcasts are proving very popular and increasing views and likes.

Pycom

Pycom have passed a vote to work more closely with NHS-R, which was welcomed by the Committee.

Pycom had discussed the need to improve the training offer to those who want to start from the very beginning and the need to follow up intro courses.  Some people have done intro courses multiple times but some courses are too general to apply to the specific problems they encounter at work.

Following NHS-R workshops, a feedback survey is sent to attendees including questions to ascertain how the learning will be applied to attendees’ work.

NHS-R is always happy to host Python courses and pass recordings over to NHS.pycom’s YouTube.
