Migrate frontend from legacy global dependencies to import syntax #70

Most browsers support this version of JS frontend and it would be a big improvement toward maintainability.
There's also browserify, which takes JS written with backend node_modules dependencies and translates them to a frontend legacy compatible package, but being able to skip this transform step would be ideal.
