In both the topic around replies as well as reactions, there has been a desire to specifically identify a prior message within a conversation. As @mkobetic pointed out in this comment, XMTP does not explicitly pass a unique identifier for each message. How XMTP might support this is worth discussion, and would no doubt relate to the target concept mentioned above. |

Can the timestamp for when a message is sent be used as a unique identifier that replies and reactions could use to link a message with a prior message ? Looping in @mkobetic to the discussion so we can get his thoughts |

Right now all SDKs calculate the same ID for messages, but it's true that it's not passed by XMTP it's just calculated by the SDKs. We also have the issue that nothing prevents a client to send two clients with the same id (just by sending twice the same data - since the id is calculated from the data) |

Hello everyone,
I wanted to start a discussion on the topic of XMTP Improvement Proposals (XIPs) related to adding content types for replies. There are several outstanding related XIPs, and I thought it would be helpful to bring them together in one place to facilitate a more focused and productive conversation. We can use this topic to discuss the different aspects of replies and approaches in how to support them.
