The former representation of octave numbers in the piano widget was, a long time ago, using subscripts like this: "C4". This can be seen in several VMPK web page old images. The style was changed in v2.0.0 removing the subscripts. I've added an option to configure this style again (or not, it is now an user choice).

This has been implemented in r657 or 363a391 and will be available in release v2.7.0
I personally prefer the subscripts, and it is the choice of Scientific pitch notation.
