Seems like at least the themes I tried out don't define gutter colors, which looks really awkward especially in dark themes. The relevant keys are gutter for the background and gutterForeground for the line numbers of inactive lines. In absence of a fancier design, good values for these are the same as for background and comment.foreground respectively.
