Simplify test system

Currently, the test system contains code copied from the ANSI test suite.

But it is now possible to give a list of extrinsic symbols to the ANSI test
suite, thereby eliminating the need to copy that code. The task is to
modify the existing test system to take advantage of this new feature
and thereby eliminate the copied code.
