since upgrading to emacs 25.1 the fonts look really off unless i zoom into a crazy large size. in fact the specific unicode fonts stay the same size as i zoom in until i reach a certain zoom and they become normal again.
anyone has a clue on how to even start looking whats causing this? is it an emacs issue, org-bullets, other?

To be able to fix the bug folks need to be able to reproduce it. Here are a few questions that might help make your bug report reproducible.
Do you use the default font settings for your installation? If not, which font are you using?
Can you provide a sample org-mode file with a screenshot of what it used to look like on your previous version of emacs and another screenshot of what it looks like in Emacs 25.1? (also mention the exact previous version of emacs you were using)
Check the elpa folder where the bullets package was installed and list which version of org-bullets you have. There will be a header at the top of org-bullets.el that looks like this:
;;; org-bullets.el --- Show bullets in org-mode as UTF-8 characters;;; Version: 0.2.4;;; Author: sabof;;; URL: https://github.com/sabof/org-bullets
Hello, I am the current maintainer of this package (more accurately, the version available on MELPA).
Sadly I fail to reproduce this issue. Should it persist, be sure to open an issue here.
