No timeline in rectangle

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Downloading source
2.Installing source as per readme.txt
3.Apache2 webserver

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The main timeline page just has an empty rectangle where the timeline should be

What version of the product are you using? On what browser and what
operating system?

2.3.0. Firefox, tried to access from Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7. Both clients 
see the same thing...empty rectangle.

Please provide any additional information below.

Using OpenJava on the Ubuntu client with iced tea plugin as found
