org-mode breaks on update

Updated spacemacs last night and found org-mode inoperable

Did some googling and was able to get it working by removing the folder manually from .emacs.d and running emacs -q and installing org from ELPA manually before starting spacemacs w/ all the special customization

During updates to spacemacs, if org-mode is being reinstalled, installation needs to occur before any other configuration is called, to prevent this issue.

Ah, I found I had a line in my config that was getting called, explaining the workaround.. this was my fault (not terribly surprising)
