CoffeeScript Syntax-Highlighting does not work

The Syntax-Highlighting for CoffeeScript does not work for .coffee files.

When i rename my CoffeeScript file to .js it does work however.

I'm seeing the same issue. Mode doesn't change unless the file extension is .js. Not even .js.coffee works.

I am assuming you got the mode specification error when you tried to open a coffee file.

Good news: emacs tried to open your coffee file in coffee-mode. Bad news: coffee-mode was not loaded yet.
To load coffee-mode, add this line before changing auto-mode-alist:

(require 'coffee-mode)

In theory, coffee-mode should be auto-loaded when it's needed so you shouldn't be getting this error at all. There could be a few reasons for coffee-mode not being loaded:

• coffee-mode is not installed. Do you have a coffee-mode.el file somewhere under ~/.emacs.d/elpa/ directory? If you enabled the javascript layer, it should install coffee-mode for you.
• the auto-loads in coffee-mode are not defined properly. If so, it could be a bug in the coffee-mode package.
• you may have stumbled onto a bug in the auto-load mechanism.

Out of curiosity, what happens if you try to open a 2nd coffee file (after you already received the error once)?

Thanks for this. I'm still very new to Spacemacs (and Emacs for that matter) and didn't realize I had enable the configuration layer. Adding this line to ~/.spacemacs resolves the issue:

(setq-default dotspacemacs-configuration-layers '(javascript))

Great. By the way, I hope you didn't literally put that line in your config. There should already be a dotspacemacs-configuration-layers variable in your .spacemacs, you should just add javascript to it. You can search github for examples (searching "spacemacs config" gives me some results).
