Rewrite in JavaScript

CoffeeScript has fallen out of favour, in my opinion, with the recent advantages in ECMAScript. I would like to rewrite the entire extension in the latest ECMAScript. This will be mostly a like-for-like rewrite initially, but will eventually involve a big restructure and modularization of the code base, which will be covered in other issues.
