I was wondering if adding some kind of an (optional) oscilloscope display could help users understand what are their doing to their waveforms?

Sure, it would definitely help.
Not sure about how it should be presented in the UI, though. Maybe a collapsible panel on the right side? Should it have its own resize handle?
It could also be a smaller oscilloscope widget. Still, I wouldn't know where to place it.
