Gift Coupons; Possible KB Article

A site owner writes... (cc @clavaque @raamdev @BruceCaldwell )

1.) I'm looking for a way that a current member can purchase a gift
membership for a friend on our site.

2.) Then after the purchase I need either the member or the gift
recipient to be able to set themselves up. Either one it doesn't matter.

To reiterate, I need a way for current members to give gift memberships
without myself having to manually input them in after purchase.

It sounds like a gift certificate is what I need, but if a coupon code
works too than I'm happy to look into that as well.

Is there a way to do this?

This is something we could work to add, but in the meantime I think a KB article that provides a hack to accomplish this could be helpful. I'm creating this TODO mainly for the KB article, but if anyone has comments they'd like to add about this please do so :-)
