zendev takes care of setting up and managing the disparate components of a standard Zenoss development environment, with or without Control Center. It's primary usecase is to checkout all github repositories needed for development and to build a developer focused docker image to run Zenoss in Control-Center. It can also:
- Quickly view branches across some or all repositories
- Automatically set up

These instructions are known to work with:
Make sure all packages are up to date with:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Now run the newdev-installer script:

A GitHub account is needed for the next part. Please make sure you have a GitHub account and that your local git installation is setup to use SSH keys. Instructions to setup github to use SSH keys can be found at:

The zendev-intaller.sh
script accepts an optional argument to specify where to install the zendev source code.
The optional argument should be a path relative to $HOME. By default, the zendev source code is installed under $HOME/src.
To install zendev with the default source location, execute the following:
curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zenoss/zendev/zendev2/binscripts/zendev-installer.sh | bash
To install zendev with a custom source location, execute the following:
curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zenoss/zendev/zendev2/binscripts/zendev-installer.sh | bash -s PATH
where PATH
is your desired location. For example, if you specified work
, then the zendev source code would
be installed into $HOME/work.
To use zendev immediately without logging in again - source ~/.bashrc
Note: if you see this error:
sysctl: setting key "net.ipv4.conf.all.promote_secondaries": Invalid argument
you can ignore it.
Note: The new zendev2 environment is not compatible with the older zendev environment. Thus, you cannot use an existing (old zendev) environment with zendev2. If you have an existing (old zendev) environment and you wish to continue using the same name with zendev2 you must remove/rename the existing environment's directory.
- Go to a directory for checkout.
cd ~/src
- Initialize an environment
<yourEnvironmentName>
. This may take some time.zendev init -t <tag> <yourEnvironmentName>
- to use stable version of Zenoss (tags can be found in product-assembly)
- for version 7.x:
zendev init -t <tag> <yourEnvironmentName>
(i.e.$ zendev init -t 7.0.18 zenoss718x) - for version 6.x:

- for version 7.x:
- Go to the valid directory
cd ~/src
- Use the previously created environment.
zendev use <yourEnvironmentName>
- Build a development based zenoss docker image.
zendev devimg
- To build devimage with zenpacks:
- for RM use:
zendev devimg -c -p resmgr
- for CZ use:
zendev devimg -c -p cse
- for RM use:
- If you have docker errors:
sudo usermod -a -G docker $USER
and relogin
- To build Control-Center use:
cdz serviced; make clean; make
- If you have an issue with Control-Center building on 6.5+ or CZ:
- do all steps from Dev Environment section
- To deploy and run zenoss:
- in Control-Center use:
zendev serviced -dxa
- for RM use:
zendev serviced -dxa --template Zenoss.resmgr
- for CZ use:
zendev serviced -dxa --template Zenoss.cse
- in Control-Center use:
- To run zenoss next time use:
screen zendev serviced
.
- To redeploy zenoss application use step 7.
If you encounter devimg serviced run errors relating to missing docker images , you may have to manually pull those images. For example: gcloud docker -- pull gcr.io/zing-registry-188222/api-key-proxy:latest
.
Note: Please make sure the version in the logs is what you actually pull.
You may use non deprecated syntax:
gcloud auth login
gcloud auth configure-docker
docker pull gcr.io/zing-registry-188222/api-key-proxy:latest
If you don’t want or need impact, you should remove it from the build by editing $YOUR_ENVIRONMENT/.zendev/.repos.json
and remove the references to the following Impact items:

If you need Impact and you can't pull it with docker:
- go to http://artifacts.zenoss.eng/releases/impact/
- find suitable version of Impact (you may look at valid branch of https://github.com/zenoss/product-assembly/blob/develop/versions.mk to get the version number)
- download install-zenoss-impact_*.run file and run it on your machine. That will install docker image locally.
- use docker tag command to change image name to valid. For example:
docker tag zenoss/impact_5.5:5.5.3.0.0 zendev/impact-devimg:latest
- after this, redeploy Zenoss.cse template with
zendev serviced -dxa --template Zenoss.cse
Add your VM IP and hostname to the /etc/hosts. After this you will be able to use a script in zendev that disable Auth0, enable local CZ login and set up a zing connector emulator: https://github.com/zenoss/zendev/blob/zendev2/setup_to_run_locally.sh The steps below are the manual way to do this.
The first change is to disable the global config vars associated with the auth0 and cse:
- In the CC UI, open the Zenoss.cse application and click Edit Variables:
- Comment out (or delete) all entries that begin with global.conf.auth0
- Change global.conf.cse-vhost to your CC host name or IP address
- Change global.conf.cse-virtualroot to /cse
- Set cse.project to the ID of your GCP project.
- Set cse.tenant and cse.source to any values you like (they can’t be blank. Furthermore they must be lower-case and single-word strings.
- Save those changes
Note: These changes will not take effect until after zproxy is restarted, but you may want to defer a restart until you have modified the configuration for zing-connector and/or have fixed 403 error for RM UI.
Edit the Configuration File /etc/zing-connector.yml and set the values for project, tenant, source, use-emulator and host-port as shown below:
- project - The value must match the value for GCP project used to start the GCP pubsub emulator. Typically, we use zenoss-zing as the project id for the emulator.
- tenant - any non-blank value will work
- source - any non-blank value will work
- use-emulator - must be true to send data to the emulator
- host-port - must be the IP where the emulator is running and the port number of the emulator.
Notes:
- After changing the configuration files, you must restart the zing-connector service.
- You can run the pubsub emulator locally with a command like:
docker run --rm --env CLOUDSDK_CORE_PROJECT=zenoss-zing -p 8085:8085 zenoss/gcloud-emulator:pubsub
. CLOUDSDK_CORE_PROJECT is the GCP project id for the emulator - You must have the emulator running BEFORE you restart zing-connector. If the zing-connector has a persistent failed health check - stop zing-connector, verify there is a GCP pubsub emulator running at the IP:port defined by host-port, and restart the zing-connector service.
If you find that you get a 403 when attaching to the zing-proxy at port 9443 you may need change the Nginx setup:
You can edit /opt/zenoss/zproxy/conf/zproxy-nginx.conf in the CC UI for Zenoss.cse service (zproxy), or edit them in zendev. In zendev to edit the nginx configuration as follows:

In this context, "product image" means an image as we deliver it to customers. At the time of this writing,
there are only two such images: core and resmgr. The product images built by zendev use "DEV" as the both the image 'maturity' label and the build number. For instance, where as a nightly build might result in an image named something like zenoss/core_5.2:5.2.0_129_unstable
, an execution of zendev build
will result in an image named zenoss/core_5.2:5.2.0_DEV_DEV
.

Building product images should NOT be an opaque process. Zendev is not required to build product images.
In fact, the nightly build process does NOT use zendev build
- zendev/build
is simply a convenient shortcut.
Two simple make commands in the zenoss/product-assembly repo
will handle the actual work of building the image.
The first step is to build the zenoss/product-base
image which is common to all Zenoss products.
The second step is to build the specific product image (e.g. zenoss/core_5.2
).
Here is the equivalent of zendev build --clean core
:

zendev/devimg
is a specialized image for use in testing Zenoss services with zendev serviced
and zendev test
.
The main characteristics that set devimg apart from standard product images are:
- devimg contains a variety of developer tools to assist with debugging (e.g Maven and the JDK).
- the uid/gid of the
zenoss
user in the image is remapped to the current developer's uid/gid. - the developer's
$(ZENDEV_ROOT)/zenhome
directory is initialized with the ZENHOME contents of a standard product image. - a variety of different softlinks and mount points are created such that when the container is started with proper mounts, all of the developer's source code for Zenoss components and ZenPacks will be mounted into the image.
- all zenpacks are link-installed into the image.
- both
zendev serviced
andzendev test
understand how to mount the right directories into thezendev/devimg
container.
By default, zendev/devimg
has only the PythonCollector ZenPack installed, because that ZenPack is required to start Zenoss.
Different command options allow the developer to control which set of ZenPacks to link-install into the image.

Build devimg with no zenpacks
$ zendev devimg
Build devimg with the same set of zenpacks used in RM
$ zendev devimg -p resmgr
zendev test
is used for running platform and/or ZenPack unit-tests using the zendev/devimg
image.
If you want to selective run certain tests, it helps to understand a little bit of how the tests are run.
After zendev/devimg
is started, and the default test execution occurs in two phases:
- the Zenoss product runtime is started by running the command
${ZENHOME}/install_scripts/startZenossForTests.sh
- the Zenoss test runner is launched by running the command
su - zenoss -c "${ZENHOME}/bin/runtests $*"
Notice the last argument of the last command, $*
- to pass in arguments to the Zenoss test runner, runtests
, you must preceed the argument with --
, something like zendev test -- --no-zenpacks
. To see all of the options for runtests

Run all tests against the current devimg; i.e. prodbin tests + tests for all installed zenpacks (if any)

Run the tests for a single ZenPack (in this case, a ZenPack defined in the core image)

Run the tests interactively. Note that you must first start the Zenoss Infrastructure services. Once the Zenoss has started, you can run whatever test(s) you want using the runtests
script.

Run a single service migration test. This doesn't require you to start any services, so you can just use a devshell.

Why doesn't cdz
work?
If you experience problems running cdz edit your ~/.bashrc
file and ensure that the line source $(zendev bootstrap)
occurs after the addition
of the directory ${HOME}/.local/bin
to your PATH. If you make changes to your .bashrc
file be sure to either close and reopen your shell or
run source ~/.bashrc
.
Why wont the docker-registry service start?
If zendev serviced
doesn't successfully come up and you see a message like:
ERRO[0133] Unable to start internal service error=healthcheck timed out isvc=docker-registry location=manager.go:379 logger=isvcs
The problem can be that the docker-registry healthcheck is trying to connect to the local ip6 address and not the ip4 address. Look in /etc/hosts and make sure the ip6 entries are not mapping localhost
. If they are, change it to something like ip6-localhost
.
