Minecraft Mod Safety

When using Minecraft mods, it is important to make sure you download them from legitimate sources. Recently, bad actors have been publishing malware disguised to look like popular mods, including SkyblockAddons. These malicious files are often designed to steal personal information including usernames, passwords, and access tokens. This guide contains a series of tips to help you ensure the mod you have downloaded is legitimate and protect your personal information.

Tips

1. Download mods from legitimate sources

When downloading any Minecraft mod, always download directly from the mod author's website, the mod author's Discord server, or from a trusted mod repository, such as CurseForge. If you download from the mod author's Discord server or forum, use the pinned link posted by the mod author or a forum admin. Do not accept files from other users. Do not download from other websites, other Discord servers, or users on Discord/other forums. These unofficial sources are not monitored by the mod author and the safety of the files on them cannot be confirmed. There are five safe sources to download SkyblockAddons. They are the releases page here, Biscuit's website, Biscuit's Discord server, the mod's Hypixel Forums thread, and Biscuit's Youtube channel.

2. Validate the file hash of the downloaded mod file

Some mod authors release a file hash along with each release of their mod. A file hash is a file's fingerprint. Different files have different hashes. Even two files with small differences in their content, like a few letters, will have completely different hashes. The hash of a downloaded mod can be checked against the hash the mod author released to determine if the file is legitimate. We have an article with instructions to verify the file hash for SkyblockAddons. The instructions for validating file hashes can vary slightly between mods as different mod authors may use different methods of generating the file hash.

3. Do not trust people who offer to share a paid mod for free

If someone is offering a paid version of a mod for free, it's most likely too good to be true. Do not download the files these people offer as they have not been checked and can contain malware. By downloading these files, you can harm your computer or give others access to your personal information.
