Since version 2.30 you can now use an external USB drive to expand game storage. Here is what you need:

  • Powered Micro USB OTG cable, you can buy it or make it yourself (guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828032)
  • A USB storage device: USB flash drive, USB hard drive or a cardreader with the appropriate card.
  • Good power supply, it's not recommended to power up your NES/SNES mini from a TV or PC directly

First of all, if you just updated to version 2.30, make sure that you instal the latest custom kernel:

Next, enable USB host in settings.

USB host

After enabling USB host, sync some games, or choose "Save settings" to keep the Enable USB host option.

Save settings

Now you can disconnect your NES/SNES Mini from the PC. From this point on you will only need to connect your NES/SNES Mini to the PC to change settings or install mods.

Add/select/customize games as usual. Because we will be writing to the USB drive, you can ignore the progress bar in the bottom. You can add as many games as you want, the only limit is the size of your USB drive.

Games size

To sync games, connect your USB drive to the PC. The USB drive must be formatted to FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS is better but FAT32 driver is more stable. Then click on the "Sync games" button while holding the shift key.

Sync USB

In next dialog box select your USB drive and press OK, then wait.

When everything has copied you can disconnected your USB drive from the PC and reconnect the drive to your NES/SNES Mini using the OTG cable. It should work. Please note that the first boot after syncing can be much longer.

Optionally you can create a “saves" folder inside the “hakchi" folder on your USB drive, so all save-states and configs will be saved there.
